This is the first of Klayman's documentaries I have seen, although she has previous experience inspecting Ai Weiwei as an artist and activist. Her inclusion satisfies the question in my mind of whether this was made from someone else's perspective. 'The Brink' isn't so much about the details of the Trump campaign as it is about capturing the offensive environment that allows Steve Bannon to prate, command and flourish while wondering his virtue rhetorically. When he complains about competition from the Democrats, it's from a resort in Venice, or on a private plane. His laments of not having power are never raw, or not self-aware. He is alone when he is influencing a Chinese billionaire to pledge financial support to his pet concept of 'economic nationalism', which he plans to rely on to maintain relevance. It's like this that figures are never separated from their agendas; America and Europe have to abandon their ideas for liberal globalisation. On the other hand, if he hadn't bad-mouthed the Democrats so ostentatiously the system in which he operates wouldn't be identifiable for its infirmity. Be lenient with the fact that this negative character study, comes close to the subject themselves.
